Static vs Dynamic QR Codes: Which Should You Use?
Static QR codes are free and permanent; dynamic codes are editable and trackable. Learn the real differences and how to choose the right one for your project.
Every QR code falls into one of two families: static or dynamic. They look identical, but they behave very differently — and picking the wrong one can mean reprinting a whole batch of packaging or losing the ability to measure a campaign. Here is how to decide.
What is a static QR code?
A static QR code stores its data directly inside the pattern. If it encodes a link, that exact link is baked in permanently. Static codes are free, never expire, and work without any server in between — which also means the destination can never be changed once the code is printed.
- Best for information that will not change: WiFi credentials, a vCard, plain text, a phone number.
- Completely free with no account required.
- No tracking — scans are not counted.
- Works forever, even if the company that made it disappears.
What is a dynamic QR code?
A dynamic QR code encodes a short redirect link instead of your final destination. When someone scans it, they hit that link and get forwarded to wherever you point it. Because the redirect lives on a server, you can change the destination at any time and record every scan.
- Edit the destination after printing — fix a typo or swap a campaign without reprinting.
- Track scans over time, by location and by device.
- Keep the printed code smaller, since it only encodes a short link.
- Requires an active account to keep the redirect and analytics running.
Rule of thumb: if the content might ever change, or you want to measure performance, go dynamic. If it is fixed information you want to last forever for free, go static.
A quick comparison
Choose static when…
- You are sharing WiFi, a contact card, or a permanent link.
- You want zero ongoing cost or dependency.
- You do not need scan data.
Choose dynamic when…
- The code goes on packaging, signage or print that is expensive to redo.
- You are running a marketing campaign and want analytics.
- You may need to redirect to a seasonal or updated page later.
Can you convert a static code to dynamic?
Not after the fact — the data is fixed in a static code. That is exactly why it pays to decide up front. When in doubt for anything printed at scale, start dynamic; the flexibility and tracking almost always pay for themselves.
You can create both types with Global QR Codes: static codes are free forever, and a free account unlocks dynamic, editable, trackable codes.
